Weight distribution in a 53′ trailer: load placement that scales legal

Two identical shipments can scale 4,000 lb apart on the tandems purely from where the pallets sit. Distribution — not just total weight — is what the scale judges. Here's how to think about it.

The mental model

Freight forward of the trailer's midpoint pushes weight toward the kingpin (and so to the drives and steer); freight behind it loads the trailer tandems. The pivot math is a simple lever — see how to calculate axle weight — but the practical rules are easy to carry in your head:

A typical 45,000 lb dry-van load

With ~12,000–13,000 lb usable on the steer, ~34,000 on drives and ~34,000 on the tandems, a 45,000 lb load on a truck with ~33,000 lb combined tare leaves little slack — you need the load's CoG near the trailer's balance point. A CoG two feet further back than planned can push the tandems over 34,000 lb on its own.
