What is payload?

Payload is the weight of the revenue cargo a vehicle carries — gross vehicle weight minus tare (empty) weight. Maximizing legal payload is the goal of load planning.

Payload is the weight of the cargo a vehicle actually carries — the revenue-earning portion of the load. It is the difference between the loaded weight and the empty weight:

Payload = gross vehicle weighttare weight

Maximizing legal payload

With the federal gross limit fixed at 80,000 lb, the way to carry more payload is to reduce tare weight (lighter equipment) and to distribute the load so no single axle group caps you before the gross limit does. A load that hits an axle limit at 76,000 lb gross is leaving 4,000 lb of legal payload on the table — which is exactly what balancing the center of gravity recovers.
