What is gross combination weight (GCW / GCWR)?

Gross combination weight (GCW) is the total weight of a power unit plus its trailer(s) and cargo. GCWR is the manufacturer's maximum rating for the combination.

Gross combination weight (GCW) is the total actual weight of a power unit and everything it tows — tractor, trailer, and cargo combined. GCWR is the manufacturer's maximum rating for that whole combination.

For a standard 5-axle tractor-semitrailer, GCW is effectively the same figure regulated as gross vehicle weight at the scale — the 80,000 lb federal Interstate cap applies to the combination.

Why the distinction exists

It matters most for spec'ing equipment: a tractor's GCWR tells you the heaviest trailer-plus-load it is engineered to pull and stop. On the compliance side, the axle limits and the Bridge Formula do the regulating; GCWR is the engineering ceiling behind it.
